Signs and Symptoms of Dyspraxia in Children – Developmental Coordination Disorder

Dyspraxia is regarded as a neurological problem which is also known as developmental coordination problem. It is a condition that affects the physical coordination which makes a child to perform less husky than expected for his or her age routinely activities and seems to move crudely.

Dyspraxia affects a child’s ability that make difficult to perform daily physical activities. These physical activities may be gripping a pencil, jumping and speaking clearly. Many kids experience mild symptoms and some have very much severe symptoms. The children with dyspraxia react immaturely and usually have average or above average intelligence. Approximately 6 to 10 per cent of children are suffering from dyspraxia although boys are affected more than girls.

Signs and Symptoms of Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia can cause an extensive range of problems when remain undiagnosed, some of which are noticeable in early age although the other may become more pronounced when the child grow older. The signs and symptoms alter as the child become older. But usually, the symptoms are present recently in life. Here are some common symptoms for all age group are mentioned below.

Signs in Infant

  • Avoid playing with puzzles and construction toys.
  • Unable to ride a play ball.
  • Do not talk as fine as the kids of the same age can and may not say a single word till the age of 3.
  • These infants are messy eater.
  • Delayed at becoming toilet trained.

Signs in Preschool Children

  • Try hard to interact and play with other children.
  • Trouble in grasping pencil, drawing and writing.
  • Problem in speaking in frequent speed, pitch and volume.
  • Speak slowly.
  • Bumps into things and people.
  • Slow to develop left or right hand dominance.
  • Problem in working with zippers buttons and snaps.
  • Difficulty learning skips and jumps.
  • Problem in holding things.

Signs in Middle School Children

  • Trouble in following instruction and remembering them.
  • Tries to avoid gym and sports.
  • Difficulty in standing for a long time due to weak muscles tone.
  • Take long time to write, because of having difficulty in forming words and gripping pencil.
  • Trouble in moving objects from one place to the other.
  • Combat with activities and games that needs hand eye coordination.

Signs in High School Children

  • Repeat things and may talk continuously.
  • Trouble in picking up nonverbal signals from others.
  • Problem in sports which involve cycling and jumping.
  • Lose and forgot things.
  • Trip and fall bumps on things and people.
